In industries such as cement production, metallurgy, and mining, the rotary kiln serves as the core of the entire production line. Its operational stability directly impacts overall efficiency and safety. At the kiln inlet (also referred to as the kiln tail), where raw materials meet high-temperature gas flow, critical components are continuously subjected to thermal stress, abrasion, and corrosion. To maintain continuous and reliable operation, regular replacement of the kiln inlet guard plate and the air cooling seal assembly is essential.
This article outlines a standardized replacement process aimed at field technicians and maintenance teams. The goal is to ensure precision, safety, and extended service life of the rotary kiln shell.
This replacement is a precise process with closely linked steps, which must be carried out strictly according to the drawings and technical standards.
Before starting, all necessary tools and parts must be prepared:
Thorough preparation ensures smooth installation and minimizes downtime.

The kiln shell must be cut according to the exact installation location. Cut the original shell section carefully, keeping the edges flat and smooth.
This step is crucial to ensure proper alignment with the guard plate and other components.

Accurate measurement and drilling on the rotary kiln shell are carried out according to engineering drawings:
All welding work must be completed by qualified welders to guarantee strength and avoid defects such as weak welds or cracks.

The guard plate is installed at the kiln inlet. Bolts are welded on site with protective covers. The protective covers can be made of round tubes, mainly to prevent the bolts from falling out. For each guard plate, only three bolt holes are required, ensuring stable and practical installation.

Following the drawings, weld the connecting plate onto the kiln shell.

Insert the asbestos rope uniformly to create an effective thermal seal, then carefully install the air cooling seal.
This step guarantees insulation and prevents hot air leakage, extending the service life of both the rotary kiln shell and its accessories.

Precision Measurement: All drilling, cutting, and welding depend on accurate initial measurement and marking. Even small deviations can lead to significant operational issues.
Welding Quality: Welding should always be performed by certified welders to ensure durability and avoid hidden safety hazards.
Protective Measures: Installation of protective covers over bolts is mandatory to safeguard both the equipment and operating personnel.
Effective Sealing: The asbestos rope must be tightly packed and evenly distributed, ensuring the air cooling seal effectively blocks hot air and protects the kiln inlet equipment.
Maintenance of a rotary kiln combines both engineering science and hands-on experience. Replacing the kiln inlet guard plate and the air cooling seal may appear to be a localized task, but in reality, it directly impacts the efficiency, safety, and stability of the entire kiln system.
By following this standardized process, from precision measurement and kiln shell cutting to welding, installation, and sealing, operators can achieve the ultimate goal: long-term, safe, and stable operation of rotary kilns in demanding industrial environments.
