Vertical Roller Mill Functions and How They Work

As energy-saving grinding technology advances, many industries now demand higher capacity, better efficiency, and stable product quality. For example, cement, metallurgy, chemicals, and new-energy materials all require more advanced grinding solutions. The vertical roller mill has become a key grinding equipment. This is because of its unique working mode and strong overall performance. But what are its core functions, and how does it work in real production? This article explains these points in a clear way.

Basic Concept of a Vertical Roller Mill

A vertical roller mill uses high pressure from grinding rollers to crush material on a rotating grinding table. Unlike traditional ball mills, it does not rely on impact from grinding balls. Instead, it uses the material bed grinding principle to achieve high energy efficiency.

The main vertical roller mill parts include the grinding table, grinding rollers, classifier, hydraulic system, drive system, and hot gas ducting. Inside the mill, material forms a continuous closed circuit: it is crushed under grinding roller pressure, dried by hot gas, classified, and discharged as product. Coarse particles return to the table for further grinding. This closed-cycle system allows the grinding mill to achieve energy savings, low consumption, environmental protection, and automation.

Vertical Roller Mill Working Principle

The vertical mill relies on the relative motion between the grinding rollers and grinding table. This grinding process is used to crush and grind the material. Hot gas dries the material, and a classifier separates the product. The process includes five stages:

1. Feeding and Material Layer Formation

Material enters the mill center through the feed inlet or cone. Centrifugal force spreads it outward to form a stable material layer. Layer thickness depends on the feed rate and table rotation speed.

2. Grinding and Crushing

The hydraulic system applies constant grinding force. Grinding rollers press and shear the material to ensure uniform grinding. Operators must adjust feed rate to match roller pressure, maintaining stable layer thickness and grinding efficiency.

3. Drying

Hot gas from the kiln or hot air furnace enters the grinding chamber via the wind ring. The gas fully contacts the material bed, quickly vaporizing and removing moisture while grinding, thus achieving simultaneous drying and comminution.

4. Classification and Recirculation

Ground material is carried upward to the dynamic classifier. The classifier controls the finished product fineness by adjusting the rotor speed. Fine powder exits as product, while coarse particles fall back for further grinding. This stable, closed-circuit system ensures stable quality.

5. Collection and Conveying

Fine powder is collected by a dust collector and sent to storage or the next process. The whole system is usually equipped with automated control and online particle size monitoring.

The entire process operates under a sealed negative pressure, producing low dust and noise, ensuring smooth material circulation and high energy efficiency.

Four Core Functions of a Vertical Roller Mill

The vertical roller mill design follows a “one machine with multiple functions” concept. This mill integrates grinding, drying, classification, and material transport. This distinguishes it from traditional mills and supports efficient operation.

1. Grinding

The vertical roller mill uses roller pressure to grind the material bed. This effectively reduces over-grinding and unnecessary energy loss (30 - 40% lower per unit than ball mills). The product has uniform particle size and regular shape, improving downstream performance.

2. Drying

Hot air enters the mill through the air ring and fully contacts the moist material, enabling simultaneous grinding and drying. Therefore, the vertical mill can operate efficiently and stably even with slag, clay, or coal containing 10 - 15% moisture. This also simplifies the pre-treatment process.

3. Classification

The internal classifier is key to product quality. Adjusting the rotor speed allows the classifier to precisely control the particle size and surface area. This control effectively avoids over-grinding and ensures the finished powder meets strict industrial requirements.

4. Transport

The hot airflow acts as both a drying medium and a pneumatic conveying system. This design simplifies the production line and makes the overall process more compact. It also reduces the need for external conveyors, lowering both maintenance points and costs.

These four functions work together to enable high-efficiency, continuous, and large-scale powder production in limited space.

Typical Applications

Due to low energy consumption, stable output, and wide adaptability, vertical roller mills are used in various industries:

  • Cement plant: Grinding raw meal and clinker using dry grinding, producing fine and uniform particles. Core equipment for modern dry-process cement lines.
  • Metallurgy: Grinding blast furnace slag, steel slag, and nickel slag to produce high-activity mineral powder, achieving high-value utilization of industrial waste.
  • Power Plants: Coal grinding systems for stable fineness and high combustion efficiency, including high-moisture raw coal.
  • Non-metallic Minerals: Grinding limestone, quartz, calcite, barite, and other minerals for coatings, paper, and chemical fillers.
  • New-Energy Materials: Lithium battery cathode materials, ultrafine ceramic powders, and other advanced powders.

How to Choose the Right Vertical Roller Mill

Choosing the correct mill model is crucial for performance and cost efficiency. Consider these factors:

  • Material Properties: Hardness, abrasiveness, and moisture content affect grinding roller pressure, grinding liner materials, and hot air system design.
  • Target Fineness and Capacity: Required particle size and production capacity determine mill Specs and classifier speed.
  • System Configuration: Integrate the mill with heat source, dust collector, and conveyors, matching airflow and fan power.
  • Maintenance and Cost: Focus on wear parts, lifespan, ease of replacement, and long-term energy use.
  • Manufacturer Strength: Choose experienced manufacturers that offer excellent after-sales service and stable spare parts supply.

Proper selection ensures stable product quality, lower energy cost, and reliable long-term operation.

Conclusion

The vertical roller mill integrates grinding, drying, classification, and transport into one efficient system. It reduces energy use, stabilizes product quality, and supports automated control. Green manufacturing and intelligent production are advancing. Vertical roller mills will continue to play a key role in modern grinding systems.
